We always have more choices than we first thought.

No time to read the blog? You can listen to it here.

If I had a chance to talk to kids at school or college, I’d want to let them know that they have choices. More choices in their life than they are being told. And that they should consider the Third Choice as a possibility. The first choice is to get a job, the second is to start a business but the third is to run a practice.

So the three choices we have are:

  • Get a job and make it a career.
  • Start a business and make it big.
  • Run a practice and live a life of design.

My youngest finished school last year and at 18 years of age, there is a lot of noise around the question “So what are you going to do next?” The school and career guidance counsellor seminars are all about getting jobs, there is a functional fitting in, go to school, get a job and ….well you know the rest.  So much of a kid’s school life is being told that they need to apply themselves, work hard, and then get a job. If fitting in is your thing, then this might be good advice. If school worked for you and university works for you, then this makes total sense. Not all kids do though and expanding their choices seems smart. Maybe you are at a point where you need to choose again, too?

Most people in the world have jobs, a few have careers, fewer again will find their vocation. Teaching kids to be intrapreneurial within jobs and careers is then the next focus of the system.

For some, those may be lucky enough to have an Aunty with entrepreneurial experience, the idea of starting your own business is possible. As such, they are told to gather experience, go and work for other people, and learn. Then, figure out the niche or area you might be able to pursue as you start your business.

The third choice is to build a thought leaders practice as a labour of love. Do work you love, with people you like, the way you want. This has a feel of ‘right livelihood’ to it as you work as an agent in the network we call society. Become self-expressed in service to others and be rewarded for your contributions.

We always have more choices than we first thought.

Shared with love and in service.
